Ground motion directionality in the 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquakes

چکیده
This paper examines the observed directionality of ground motions in the Christchurch urban area during the 2010–2011 Canterbury, New Zealand earthquakes. A dataset of ground motions recorded at 20 strong motion stations over 10 different earthquake events is utilized to examine the ratios of various response spectral directionality definitions and the orientation of the maximum direction. Because the majority of previous related studies have utilized overlapping ground motion datasets from the NGA database, the results of this study provide a largely independent assessment of these ground motion aspects. It is found that the directionality ratio between the maximum (100th percentile) and 50th percentile orientation-independent spectral acceleration is similar to that obtained from recent studies. Ground motions from the 4 September 2010 Darfield earthquake are shown to exhibit strong directionality for source-to-site distances up to Rrup= 30 km, notably further than results from a previous study, which suggests that such effects are generally limited to Rrup< 5 km. The adopted dataset also offers the unique potential to consider site-specific effects on directionality ratios and maximum direction orientations; however, in both cases, site-specific effects are found not to be significant in the observed empirical results. Effects of Ground Motion Directionality on the Seismic Behavior of Mid-rise Concrete Buildings with Considering Unequal Live-Load Distribution in Height
The incident angle of ground motion is one of the sources of uncertainty in the seismic response of buildings. Moreover, understanding the structural response to the impose ground motion may cause significant changes in the maximum response of buildings. In order to investigate the effect of the spatial distribution of orthogonal components of earthquake strong motion on the structural response...
متن کاملA Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran
Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...
متن کاملNumerical modelling of multi-directional earthquake loading and its effect on sand liquefaction
Earthquakes generate multi-directional ground motions, two components in the horizontal direction and one in the vertical. Nevertheless, the effect of vertical motion on site response analysis has not been the object of extensive research. The 2010/2011 Canterbury sequence of seismic events in New Zealand is a prime example among other earlier field observations strongly corroborating that the ...
متن کاملVertical ground motion and its effects on liquefaction resistance of fully saturated sand deposits
Soil liquefaction has been extensively investigated over the years with the aim to understand its fundamental mechanism and successfully remediate it. Despite the multi-directional nature of earthquakes, the vertical seismic component is largely neglected, as it is traditionally considered to be of much lower amplitude than the components in the horizontal plane. The 2010-2011 Canterbury earthq...
متن کاملPreliminary Analysis for Characteristics of Strong Ground Motion from Gigantic Earthquakes
The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake (Mw9.0), which produced many strong motion records, provides an opportunity to examine the characteristics of strong ground motion from a gigantic earthquake. In this paper, the preliminary analysis of the ground motion attenuation, spectral shape and duration was performed using the selected strong motion records of the earthquake. The result...
